The lone painter is working away, no doubt hiding from the world as he is hiding from the viewer. On a sunny day in front of the Grand Tetons, he has chosen to work on a painting of the night, with a dark sky full of stars and their whirling halos. The reason for his odd choice is for the reader to conjecture.. Meanwhile, the stream at Schwabacher’s landing beneath the mountain flows as it has since the beginning of time, reminding us again that the human experience, with all the emotions and thoughts tied to it, are of no concern to the natural world.
